villandry

A few days ago I was reminded of the visit we paid (over ten years ago!) to the beautiful Villandry gardens. Such a lovely day, spent biking along the Loire valley. It was impossible not to stop for a walk through these incredible gardens. The perfect geometry of the Renaissance flower beds has always fascinated me, and I attempted to translate the feeling of completion they produce.. into my stitching! 

Qualche giorno fa mi è tornata in mente la visita fatta (più di dieci anni fa!) ai bellissimi giardini di Villandry. Una giornata incantevole, trascorsa pedalando lungo la Loira. Era impossibile non fermarsi per una passeggiata in questi fantastici giardini. La geometria perfetta delle aiuole Rinascimentali mi ha sempre affascinato ed ho cercato di riprodurre il senso di completezza che infondono... nel mio ricamo!

The octagonal shape of the design suited a pincushion but I wished to try something new. Something that could fit an elegant dame walking in a fairy tale garden. Something like a purse, that could hang from her waist while she chatted sweetly with a friend. 

La forma ottagonale del disegno era perfetta per un puntaspilli, ma ho voluto provare qualcosa di nuovo. Qualcosa che fosse adatta ad una dama elegante che cammina in un giardino da fiaba. Qualcosa da appendere alla cintura mentre passeggia e chiacchiera dolcemente con un'amica. 

Stitched on 32ct Siena linen (Graziano), DMC threads, a plain ecru fabric for the lining, with just a little lace, loosely attached.  Bag fastening by Prym.

Ricamato su lino Siena (Graziano) 32ct, fili DMC, stoffa ecru leggera, semplice per l'interno con giusto un tocco di pizzo. Chiusura per borsa di Prym.

green! verde!

The lavender plant we have in the garden is full of flowers at the moment and I brought some indoor. They smell lovely so I sewed this small pendant to hang in the wardrobe. I had these scraps of fabric for a while and love the bright green in the design. Makes me smile!

La pianta di lavanda che abbiamo in giardino è fiorita in questo periodo e ho portato qualche spighetta in casa. Il profumo è buonissimo, così ho velocemente cucito questo piccolo sacchetto da appendere nell'armadio. Avevo da un po' questi pezzi di stoffina verde, mi piace molto il loro tono così brillante. Mi fa sorridere!

variegated threads... fili che cambiano colore

I have a number of skeins of variegated threads. Both DMC and hand dyed ones and I always think I should use them more often. They are really effective. I guess all you need is the right design. This chart is from Plum Pudding Needle Art and I used a thread called Cantelupe by Six Strand Sweets. I had the floss as a gift (thank you!) and I am sorry to see that it is no longer produced. It was really lovely to work with!

Ho parecchie matassine di fili mélange, sia DMC sia tinti a mano. Mi dico sempre che dovrei usarli più spesso perchè l'effetto è davvero bello. In fondo tutto quello che serve è lo schema giusto. Questo è di Plum Pudding Needle Art e il filato che cambia colore è Cantelupe di Six Strand Sweets. Il filo è un ragalo (grazie!) ed è un peccato che non lo producano più perchè era gradevolissimo da usare!

WIP ... lavoro in corso

Summer is lovely but I already long for autumn. Autumn light, autumn colors, autumn rainy days, autumn temperatures!! Hot weather is not for me, and I suppose this is why I picked up precisely this chart last night when I decided I wanted a brand new project to work on. I know I have plenty of UFOs already but I simply could not help it! :D
The chart is from Bent Creek, called Peaceful Forest and I am stitching it on a fantastic 32ct Permin linen called Sandstone.

L'estate sarà anche bella ma ho già voglia di autunno, di luce autunnale, di colori autunnali, di giornate piovose, di temperature autunnali!! Il caldo non fa per me, e sospetto sia per questo che l'altra sera ho "pescato" proprio questo schema dalla mia biblioteca. Avevo voglia di un progetto tutto nuovo... Lo so ho già tanti progetti in corso, ma non ho resistito! :D
Lo schema è di Bent Creek, si chiama Peaceful Forest e lo sto ricamando su un bellissimo lino Permin 32ct chiamato Sandstone.

How do you like your eggs?... come ti piacciono le uova?

Do you remember the movie Runaway bride? Well, there was this scene where Julia Roberts realizes she must learn to know herself before she is ready for a relationships. So deeply true... And she starts from her eggs. There is this huge display of all the possible ways you would cook your eggs, and she finally knows her favorite. Mine is scrambled, by the way :)

But let's talk about leftover egg cartons. What happens of them? Ours usually go into the paper recycle bin, but some time ago I saw a photo on Pinterest that gave me a better idea. How is it for recycling them into a lovely (and useful) sewing kit? All you need is a few scraps of fabric, some glue or tape, and a spare hour or so. And... voilà!

 

Ricordate il film Se scappi ti sposo? C'era una scena in cui Julia Roberts capisce che deve imparare qualcosa su di sè prima di impegnarsi in una relazione. Verissimo, tra l'altro... Bene, per farlo, comincia cercando di scoprire come le piacciono le uova. E si mette ad assaggiare tutte lo possibili combinazioni finchè trova la sua preferita. Le mie preferite, per inciso, sono le uova strapazzate :)

Ma che succede ai cartoni delle uova? Noi in genere li ricicliamo con la carta, ma qualche tempo fa ho visto su Pinterest una foto che mi ha dato un'idea migliore. Ricilarli in un pratico e grazioso cestino da cucito. Tutto quel che serve è qualche pezzetto di stoffa, un po' di colla o del bi-adesivo, e un'oretta libera. E... voilà!

With a pretty flower I made a pocket for mini-scissors and a needle threader, a small berlingot holds safety pins and some buttons (you never know when you might need them), matching pincushion of course, and a “necklace” helps to keep some bobbins ready for use. Easy peasy! ♥

 

Ho usato un fiorellino di stoffa per creare una taschina per forbicine e infila-ago, un mini-berlingot per fissare qualche spilla e dei bottoni (non si sa mai, servono sempre!), ho cucito un punta-spilli in tema, e legato con del nastro I rocchetti di filo in modo che siano pronti all'uso. Facile, no? ♥

 

 

garden fresh... fresco fresco dal giardino

I stitched this lovely design from Little House Needleworks over a year ago, but never sewed it up. Last week I had an inspiration and remembered I had the "right" backing fabric for it in my stash. So, after some struggling with linen, gingham and lace, here it is. Great for holding crochet projects or even socks, come to think about it!

Questo bel disegno di Little House Needleworks è un ricamo di oltre un anno fa, ma non avevo mai trovato il modo di impiegarlo. La settimana scorsa ho avuto un'ispirazione, e mi sono ricordata di avere la stoffina perfetta per completarlo. Così, dopo aver litigato un po' con il lino, la stoffa a quadretti e il pizzo, eccolo finito! Comodo per ospitare i progetti all'uncinetto, o i calzettoni ora che ci penso!

It all happened by chance... I was in a small bead shop and saw this round pendant. It looked weird as it was just an empty circle. In fact it was a large fastener to use on heavy necklaces. Silly me :)

Anyway I bought it on impulse, thinking it could be useful.

Last night I was playing with my crochet, unsure as to what I wished to make, and saw the empty circle. It took a while to get things working as, of course, I did not have the "right" hook at hand and was so comfortable in my seat I would not start a hook chase... How about being lazy! 

I had some jute fabric though, which I thought would work well with my hook and some threads. So here is the result! Can you guess? I foresee an expedition to the bead shop for more empty pendants, and this time I will also look in my boxes for the proper hook so I can try using linen as well!

E' successo per caso... Ero in un negozietto che vende perline e ho visto questa specie di ciondolo rotondo. Mi era parso strano perché era solo un cerchio vuoto, ed in effetti ho poi scoperto che era parte di una chiusura per collane. Che sciocca! :)

Comunque, d'impulso l'ho comprato lo stesso. Non si sa mai a cosa potrebbe servire!

L'altra sera giocavo con l'uncinetto, senza avere un'idea precisa di cosa volevo fare e mi è tornato in mente il cerchio vuoto. Mi ci è voluto un po' per capire come fare, anche perché ovviamente non avevo a portata di mano l'uncinetto giusto. E stavo così comoda che proprio non mi andava di iniziare la ricerca di un uncinetto più sottile. Quando si dice la pigrizia....

Però, avevo della juta, con fori della misura giusta (o quasi) per l'uncinetto che avevo in mano, e avevo qualche filo colorato. Ed ecco il risultato! Prevedo una visita al negozio per comprare altri cerchi e una caccia la tesoro per trovare tra i miei uncinetti perchè adesso voglio provare con il lino!
